Local Business Owner Finds a Surgery Free Solution for Torn Meniscus

Mustafa Jaffer has played competitive sports — volleyball, soccer, tennis and squash — throughout his life.

After suffering a meniscus tear in his left knee over two years ago, he sought help at our Macungie clinic, where he worked with Rick Grubb, PT, MSPT, Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. The treatment that Jaffer received helped him excel at his current favorite game: pickleball.

“That’s become my new addiction, because I’m winning some tournaments,” Jaffer said with a laugh.

Jaffer’s work with Grubb turned out to be a good match. Rick Grubb, informally known as our “Pickleball PT,” is an expert on helping pickleball athletes overcome injuries and get back on the court. He used blood flow restriction therapy, a specialized piece of equipment, to build up Jaffer’s strength without stressing his injured knee.

“Mustafa was a great candidate for blood flow restriction therapy because he was highly motivated,” Grubb said. “Blood flow restriction allows patients to build strength and muscle endurance without placing heavy loads on their joints. I like to integrate technology in rehab. For someone as active as Mustafa, it helped bridge the gap between rehab and returning to the level of performance he wanted on the pickleball court.”
