Healing in Motion: Brook Caruso’s ACL Recovery

After undergoing ACL surgery, Brook Caruso wanted to get back on her feet as soon as possible.

Post-surgical physical therapy helped her get there. Caruso worked with Rick Grubb, PT, MSPT at our Macungie clinic to progress through the post-surgical healing process. She started physical therapy just three days after her surgery, with two major events to get ready for: her son’s graduation party, which she planned to host, and a vacation in Napa Valley.

“The challenge with post-op ACL rehab is finding the right exercise prescription for success,” said Grubb. With his guidance, Caruso was able to walk without crutches four weeks after the surgery, just in time to host the graduation party.

“PT has been critical to my healing,” she said. “Rick is extremely knowledgeable, encouraging, honest and professional.”

Grubb developed an individualized treatment plan for Caruso based on her needs and his own experience. “Recovery from an ACL reconstruction can be challenging, but I’ve found that the sooner we get patients moving, the better the outcomes,” he shared. “I view rehab as a team effort between the patient, the surgeon, and myself.”

“We are also lucky to have the latest equipment and technology to help stimulate muscle growth and recovery here at Physical Therapy at St. Luke’s,” Grubb added.

Caruso’s speedy transition into post-surgical rehab played a major role in facilitating her healing. “The Macungie office has been able to get me scheduled when I’ve needed,” she said.

Caruso is now onto the next phase of her busy life. To read the full story, click here.
